Tea tree is the workhorse of the essential oil world. Where other oils are prized for subtlety or complexity, tea tree earns its place through sheer usefulness — a genuine first-line natural remedy with a serious evidence base behind it.

Steam-distilled from the leaves of Melaleuca alternifolia, a small tree native to coastal New South Wales, tea tree has been used medicinally by Indigenous Australians for thousands of years. Its defining compound is terpinen-4-ol, which makes up 30–48% of a good oil and carries the bulk of its antimicrobial punch.

Why it works

Tea tree’s antimicrobial credentials are exceptional — active against a broad sweep of bacteria, fungi and viruses, including several influenza strains. It’s one of the few essential oils with enough research behind it to be used as a credible natural first response, not just a pleasant smell.

What to actually use it for

Skin. A landmark 1990 Medical Journal of Australia trial found 5% tea tree gel performed as well as 5% benzoyl peroxide on acne — with fewer side effects. It’s also the go-to for minor cuts, grazes and fungal niggles.

Breathing & immunity. Diffused regularly, it helps cut airborne pathogens and supports the body through cold and flu season. It blends beautifully with eucalyptus and lemon.

Around the home. One of the most effective natural cleaning agents going — add it to a surface spray to knock back bacteria and mould on kitchen and bathroom surfaces. It’s also a long-standing remedy for dandruff and itchy scalp: 3–5 drops into your regular shampoo does it.
