Latin Name : Ocimum Basilicum.
Plant Part Used : Flowering Herb.
Source : India.
Extraction Method : Steam Distillation.
Basil Essential Oil is produced by steam distillation of the basil plant’s leaves and flowering tops. Pale greenish-yellow in colour with a fresh, crisp aroma, it is commonly used in aromatherapy to promote mental alertness, calm the nerves, and encourage clear thinking. Native to tropical Asia and the Pacific Islands, basil is now widely cultivated across Europe and the United States.

Traditionally, basil oil has been associated with supporting respiratory comfort and has been used in practices addressing concerns such as asthma, bronchitis, and sinus congestion. It has also been used in holistic traditions to help ease nervous tension, stress-related headaches, and migraines, and to counter mental fatigue by promoting focus and mental strength. In addition, it has been used for digestive discomforts such as constipation, nausea, cramps, and vomiting, as well as for menstrual concerns. Basil oil is also traditionally believed to help with joint discomfort, including gout and arthritis, refresh the skin, and soothe insect bites. However, it is generally advised that pregnant women and children under 16 avoid using this oil.
Basil holds a special place in Indian culture, where it has been valued for centuries in both spiritual practices and traditional healing. The leaves are often used in prayer rituals, soaked in coconut or holy water and shared after temple ceremonies. They have also been traditionally chewed to soothe sore throats and coughs. A decoction made from tulasi (holy basil) leaves is commonly consumed to help relieve throat pain and respiratory discomfort.
